Where the vision is one year, cultivate flowers.
Where the vision is ten years, cultivate trees.
Where the vision is eternity, cultivate society.
-Asian proverb

Egofree Journeys continues to raise funds to support several grassroots, non-profit, NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) and projects in Nepal. These organizations are working to better the lives of the people in Nepal, and to preserve their culture.

There is great need in Nepal, as there is in much of the world. We have chosen to support projects where we have ongoing relationship and know that the money we raise will go directly into the project.

The Projects

1. The Sacred Land Initiative and Redi (Renewable Energy Development International) have been working for over 6 years to renovate and rebuild the Thupten Choling Monastery. Egofree Journeys has been contributing to the renovation of the huts that the 350 nuns live in.

Lung and rheumatic disease are a primary cause of illness and death in Nepal. $250 per hut will provide a smokeless stove and chimney and a tin roof through the Ani Hut Project.

2. The Chiwong Monastery Sangey Trust has been working to rehabilitate and restore the Chiwong Monastery, build a Buddhist Learning Center and support the sacred ceremony of Mani Rimdu. To perpetuate Tibetan Buddhist ceremony and culture, Egofree Journeys has been supporting the Mani Rimdu festival.

3. And, in the far reaches of Nepal, Egofree Journeys is working with THIS (The Himalayan Innovative Society), in the remote region of Humla.

Students in Nepal have no future, unless they are able to pass an exam called the SLC (School Leaving) Exam. But, in Humla, where the overall literacy rate is 20% and the quality of education so poor, students have virtually no possibility of passing this exam.

Three years ago, with THIS’ founders DB Lama, and Babita Lama (the first woman to receive an education), both natives of Humla, we developed a private tutoring program for students showing any promise of passing the SLC exam. Last year, 23 of our 34 students passed!

On September 16th, 2006, Egofree Journeys will be hosting a fundraiser in San Diego, California. Please contact us if you would like to support these projects in any way, or stay informed as our fundraiser develops.
